The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Following Jesus is the way to build your life and your faith on that solid foundation. The foundation that will help you weather all of life’s storms.

Are you a momma heartbroken over your child's rejection of God?

The Ruby Tent was born out of my journey back to faith. I felt God leading me to share my story of redemption from homosexuality. My mom and I faced many struggles during my time of rebellion, but through God’s grace, we learned to heal and overcome our flesh to love each other. This powerful transformation led me back to God, and now we’re using our story to support other mothers whose children have turned away from their childhood faith.

Our signature course, “Love God’s Way,” is designed to bring healing and hope to heartbroken mothers by demonstrating practical ways God calls us to love those who disagree with us, even if they are our adult children. Leading this course live was such a full circle moment for us, as we poured into other moms the lessons we learned, hoping they might avoid the depth of heartache we experienced.

Join us in this course, and experience that hope for yourself!

Self-Publishing vs Traditional: Which is best for your book?

My Favorite Publishing Model:
Why Traditional vs. Self-Publishing Is the Wrong Debate

In the ever-evolving world of publishing, the debate between traditional and self-publishing often leaves aspiring authors feeling stuck. The pressure to choose sides can be overwhelming, especially when each approach has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. But what if I told you that the real conversation isn't about choosing sides? Instead, it's about embracing a new approach that positions your book for success. This post will explore the changing landscape of publishing, the pitfalls of the traditional versus self-publishing debate, and a strategic hybrid approach that empowers authors to take control of their message.

The Changing Landscape of Publishing

Hi, I'm Carolyn Wiley, founder of Rose & Pearl Publishing, and in this post, I want to explore how the publishing landscape has dramatically shifted over the past decade. According to industry reports, the number of books published each year has skyrocketed—rising from hundreds of thousands to millions. The barriers to entry have essentially disappeared, and anyone with a story to tell can publish a book in a matter of hours.

However, despite this accessibility, millions of books released each year fail to make an impact. Many authors find themselves discouraged when their hard work doesn’t yield the expected results. This situation calls for a deeper examination of the publishing process and the strategies that can turn a mere manuscript into a meaningful contribution to the world.

The Pitfalls of Traditional vs. Self-Publishing

We often see two distinct camps in the publishing world:

  • Traditional Publishing: Offers prestige and validation. Getting a book published through a traditional publisher is often seen as a mark of success. However, it comes with slow timelines, loss of control over how your book is marketed and presented, and the risk of being pigeonholed into specific genres or niches. Traditional publishing can also be a lengthy process, often taking months or even years from the time you submit your manuscript to when your book actually hits the shelves.

  • Self-Publishing: Provides authors with full ownership and faster timelines. This model allows for greater creative freedom, but it can compromise quality and marketing strategy. Many self-published authors struggle with aspects like professional editing, design, and distribution, leading to books that may not meet the expectations of readers or the market.

The Stalemate for Aspiring Authors

Many authors find themselves caught between these two options, unsure of how to move forward. This indecision often results in wasted time and frustration, especially for those who feel they have a message to share. The question then becomes: How can authors navigate this landscape more effectively?

The Real Question

What if the focus shouldn't be on which model is better, but rather on how to blend the best parts of each to effectively reach your readers? The truth is, writing a good book is just the beginning. In today’s market, your book must be strategically positioned and professionally executed to stand out among the millions of titles available.

Understanding Your Audience

Before diving into the mechanics of publishing, it’s crucial to identify who your audience is. Understanding your readers will help you tailor your message and decide how best to present it. Ask yourself:

  • Who will benefit from my book?

  • What problems does my book solve?

  • Where do my readers typically find their books?

This understanding will inform not just your writing but also your marketing strategy, helping you answer the question of how to best position your book in the market.

The Strategic Hybrid Approach

This is where my favorite publishing model comes into play—a strategic hybrid approach. Unlike other hybrid models where authors relinquish ownership, this strategy ensures that you maintain control over your message while collaborating with professionals at key stages.

What Does the Strategic Hybrid Approach Look Like?

  1. Ownership: You keep your voice and vision intact. You decide what your book will say and how it will say it. This is essential for authors who want to maintain their unique perspective and message.

  2. Professional Support: You work with experts in editing, design, and marketing to elevate the quality of your book. This doesn’t mean giving away your rights but rather partnering with professionals who can help you refine your work. For instance:

    • Editing: Professional editing can catch mistakes and improve the flow of your writing.

    • Design: A well-designed cover and layout can significantly impact a reader's first impression.

    • Marketing: A solid marketing strategy ensures that your book reaches its intended audience.

  3. Intentional Positioning: You build something meaningful and purpose-driven, rather than waiting to be chosen. This means thinking critically about how your book fits into the market and how to make it discoverable. This is where many authors miss the mark; they focus solely on writing without considering how it will be positioned.

The Role of a Support Network

In this hybrid model, your support network is crucial. This might include:

  • Writing Coaches: They can help you clarify your message and keep you accountable.

  • Publishing Consultants: They can guide you in navigating the complexities of the publishing world.

  • Marketing Experts: They can help you develop a strategy that aligns with your goals.

By building a team around you, you empower yourself to focus on what you do best—writing—while still ensuring that your book is polished and market-ready.

Why This Model Works

This hybrid approach aligns the interests of everyone involved:

  • Authors retain their voice and ownership, allowing them to create work that feels authentic to their vision.

  • Publishers and teams can focus on quality and positioning, ensuring that the final product is professional and appealing.

  • Distributors and retailers benefit from a polished product that stands out in a crowded marketplace.

  • Readers receive books that are crafted with intention and clarity, helping them find meaningful content without sifting through noise.

The Reader's Experience

In today’s saturated market, readers are overwhelmed by choices. They are looking for books that not only entertain but also provide value. When authors take the time to ensure their books are well-crafted and thoughtfully positioned, readers benefit from a more enriching experience. This is a win-win situation, as it fosters a deeper connection between authors and their audience.

The Shift Towards Quality

Authors are increasingly recognizing the importance of investing in quality. Instead of merely completing a book, they are now considering its broader purpose and impact. This shift can lead to the creation of works that resonate deeply and open doors for future opportunities.

The 'Diamond in the Rough' Phenomenon

We've all heard the term "diamond in the rough" when discussing books that have the potential to shine but need the right conditions to do so. Interestingly, these books are becoming less rare because authors are starting to take ownership of the process. They’re investing in quality and thinking beyond just getting the book done. They are beginning to ask, "What is my book actually for?"

This mindset shift is transformative. Inside programs like Christian Writers Arise, I see this shift happen in real-time. Authors come in thinking they just need to write a book, but they soon realize they’re actually building something much bigger—a message that carries weight, a book that opens doors, and a body of work that continues long after the first one is published.

The Key Question to Ask

So, what role will your book play in your life once it's finished? Answering this crucial question helps clarify the quality of work needed, the type of support required, and even the timeline for publication.

Reflecting on Your Goals

Consider your personal and professional goals. Do you want to establish yourself as an authority in your field? Are you looking to create a legacy? Do you want to generate income from your book? The answers to these questions will guide your decisions throughout the publishing process.

  • Quality: If your goal is to establish authority, higher quality will be essential. This might require investing more in professional editing and design.

  • Support: If you aim to generate income, you’ll need a robust marketing strategy and possibly the help of a professional.

  • Timeline: Understanding your goals will also inform how quickly you need to complete your book. A tight deadline might require more intensive support.

Conclusion

If this perspective has changed how you think about publishing, I’d love to hear from you! Share your journey in the comments below. If you're ready to view your book as a tool that works for you long after its completion, you're in the right place.
