8 Scriptures Every Believer Should Know

When storms come, it’s good to have a flashlight and an umbrella - to be able to see where you are going and to be protected at the same time.

Flashlights and Umbrellas

Flashlights are wonderful things. I don’t use one often, but usually when I need a flashlight, it is not nearby. I have to go digging thru the junk drawer in the kitchen or rummage thru my husband’s toolbox.

God says His Word “is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105). It is a flashlight to help you see the way. But is it close enough to you to use?

Umbrellas fall into the same scenario. A rain storm comes thru while I’m in the store and my umbrella is in the car or right outside the back door back home. Never where I need it when I need it.

Ephesians 5:17 says, “Take… the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” God's Word is protection from the elements, but will you get wet finding it?

Keep God's Word Close

When storms come, it’s good to have a flashlight and an umbrella - to be able to see where you are going and to be protected at the same time. Wise women are prepared!

The storms of life are spiritual and emotional battles, as well as physical ones. We need to be as prepared for those battles (or maybe even more prepared) by memorizing scripture. “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” (1 Peter 3:15)

These storms are more difficult to navigate than rain storms. Having the weapon that gives you sight and protection close by is essential. Sure, you have your phone or computer nearby. But do you have time to look up a verse when the enemy attacks?

When Jesus was tempted by the devil, He used God’s word to protect Himself. (Matthew 4:1-11) His example shows us how to operate in the middle of trials and tribulations - SPEAK God's Word to your trial! And to speak it, you must KNOW it. Rather than carrying it with you on your phone, carry it in your heart. Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

Unlike my flashlight and umbrella, I have God’s word close and available to help me when a sudden storm presses in.

Now, where did I leave my car keys?

Practical Advice for Memorizing Scripture

Memorizing is easier for some than for others. Before you commit to memorizing a scripture, ask God to reveal it to you so you will understand it better and will see its value.

How to memorize is an individual thing. There are many methods. My method is to write it and try to repeat it without reading it. I do that everyday until I can both write it and say it from memory.  I used this method to memorize Psalm 91 several years ago, adding a verse or two each week until I could write out the entire chapter.

Some people are using temporary verse tattoos that have the first letter of each word in the verse. For example, the verse, "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you," would be CAYAOHBHCFY. You can then practice by looking at the tattoo and reciting the memory verse until you know it.

You can also use memory cards that have the verse printed on them. Placing these cards in key locations around your home and reciting the verse every time you see the card will help you have the verse memorized in no time. (Would you like some memory cards? Keep reading!)
